Bukit Lawang – Day Trip to Tangkahan

Tangkahan is about 40 km (2.5 hours) from Bukit Lawang. We go there by driving a Jeep or motorcycle. It is a muddy and/ or rocky road, so our journey is an adventure off road.

During this trip to Tangkahan, we drive through palm oil plantations and many villages.We can stop on the way to see a very beautiful forest view from a distance. Tangkahan is called a hidden paradise, with beautiful forest which we can see from the edge of the river. There are two big rivers flowing.

The Batang river and the Bamboo river. The river is very clean and fresh and a great place to swim.

At the bamboo river is there a hot spring, so we could go there to enjoy two different types of waters. We could also visit the waterfalls or beaches butterfly on the river.

On the Batang river we can do tube down the river and have lunch at the riverside while enjoying the Gelugur waterfall. This waterfall is very pretty and bigger in comparison with the waterfalls of the Bamboo river. You can have a bath in the waterfall. Afterwards we can do activities such as bathing elephants .

Itinerary

Our expert guide will pick you up after breakfast around 10:00 am.The trip to Tangkahan is about 2.5 hours. On the way we can stop to see the oil palm plantations and a beautiful panorama view.

We will arrive in Tangkahan around 12:30.We can go to Bamboo River for lunch.After lunch we could swim in the river which is very clean and fresh, or we can also choose to go in the hot spring. In this place if you would like to jump in the river, there is a big rock. From this rock you can jump in.

We can walk down the river to visit some waterfalls.In these waterfalls we can take a bath or massage. Afterwards we can walk towards the top of the river to visit the butterfly beach.If we’re lucky we could see a lot of colorful butterflies, which are very beautiful at this beach.

Around 15:00 we go back to the car and drive to the elephant center to see the elephants. Around 15.30 we go to the river and give the elephants a bath about 1 hour.After Elephant bath finish we drive back to Bukit lawang for another 2 hours.
Tour will be finish in bukit lawang around 19:00 pm.

– There are no elephants activities on Friday, because they are on jungle patrol.
– It is possible to do a 1 hours elephants ride,the extra cost for this is 65 euro/ person.

We will arrive in Tangkahan around 10:30.We can go to Bamboo River for a swim in the river which is very clean and fresh, or we can also choose to go in the hot spring. In this place if you would like to jump in the river, there is a big rock.From this rock you can jump in.

We can walk down the river to visit some waterfalls.In these waterfalls we can take a bath or massage. Afterwards we can walk towards the top of the river to visit the beach butterfly.If we’re lucky we could see a lot of colorful butterflies, which are very beautiful at this beach.

Around 12:30 we will tube down the Batang river for about 30 minutes to get to the waterfall Gelugur. The waterfall is very beautiful and the water is very clean. We will have lunch here and if we are lucky we will see animals such as monkeys and lizards.

This is one of my favourite experiences yet. Not even 10 minutes in we saw Thomas monkeys, and not even an hour in we saw orangutans. In total we saw 5 adults and 4 babies!

Jungle trekking in Bukit Lawang was awesome, I did see one of orangutan with local guide Seger nice man. Gunung Leuser NP is very admirable. And jungle trekking by riding an Elephant in Tangkahan was so great
