While Sumatra feels wild and remote, it is surprisingly accessible.

As there are generally no direct flights from Europe, North America, or Oceania, your trip will involve an international flight to a major Southeast Asian or Middle Eastern hub, followed by a connecting flight directly to the island.

The primary international gateway is Kualanamu International Airport (KNO), located near Medan in North Sumatra. This modern airport is the ideal starting point for many of our popular tours, including jungle trekking in Bukit Lawang and exploring the magnificent Lake Toba.

Fly into **Kualanamu International Airport (KNO)** at Medan, the nearest airport. Bukit Lawang is roughly 4 hours by road from there.

We arrange the transfer for you — it is included in every tour package and can be added to any trek. Public buses and shared minibuses also run from Medan, more slowly.

The page itself draws the flight routes into Medan from Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia, naming the airlines and the number of changes for each.
